No Mythical Creatures, but still a fairyland.

We have had some beautifully decorated trees for about five days now due to an unusual string of conditions.  This is the longest time that I can remember that it stayed on the trees.  On Saturday we had a cold front move in and with it came fog. Over night real long fragile crystals formed on anything that stuck up in the air a little way.  I didn't get any pictures of those fine crystals.

Then on Sunday we got a real unusual condition with very small super cooled water droplets.  It was 16 F outside but the droplets were liquid until they hit something.  Then they instantly froze.  This is the conditions that pilots fear.  Super cooled icing.  We drove to church and it was real challenging.  The drops froze on the windshield as soon as they hit.  There was a narrow 3 - 4" band across the bottom of the windshield that remained clear.  If we stopped, the defroster could melt it, but as soon as we started driving again, The windshield cooled and it was back.

The picture below shows what the trees looked like when these super cooled droplets  hit the crystals.  The result was sort of fat whiskers.  Then on Sunday night we got some light snow that added to the whole effect.

I wish we had some pictures that captured the true effect.

Everything was decorated.  Barbed wire.  Flag poles.  Grass.  Everything.

Most of our pictures were taken with the auto setting on the camera.  To get a more realistic picture, the pictures need to be over exposed a bit.  I need to find the best way to do that.  this picture is better.

But no mythical creatures.

  1. Neat pictures!

The big storm missed us completely. We have had a couple cold days, but nothing more. It has been clear and sunny.

  3. You know God just creates the most beautiful things for us mere people to look at!

Just a mere person in this world---your sister.
